In a visit to Albuquerque on July 16, Republican presidential candidate John McCain discussed U.S. involvement in the Middle East and suggested students should join the armed forces or the Peace Corps to pay increasing tuition prices.

Before giving the floor to audience members for questions, McCain spoke about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Texas Tech administrators believe the university is well on its way to shedding its accreditation probation.

In December 2007 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges put Tech on accreditation probation - but continued its accreditation - when the university failed to meet one of the association's 82 accreditation standards.

On Friday, anti-war protesters from the Year Five Coalition met on campus to march a $200 reimbursement to the Student Activities Center.

The payment was for campus property damage that occurred during a spring break protest.

Over spring break, protesters left red handprints on UNM signs, sidewalks and streets near the Public Policy building on Sigma Chi Road.

On June 25, the Dallas City Council approved a multi-million dollar boost for the proposed UNT Dallas Law School in the Old Municipal Building.

Denton police records show a decrease in total complaint calls from Fry Street during the past two years.

According to statistics from the Denton Police Department, the number of calls received from Fry Street has decreased by 8.1 percent between June 2006 and May 2008 from the 100 block of Avenue A through the 200 blocks of Fry Street, between West Mulberry Street and West Oak Street.

Almost 700 prisoners were released from behind bars in Lyles, Tenn. on June 26. These prisoners were not convicted criminals, however. They were dogs.

The Humane Society of the United States helped local and state officials remove the almost 700 dogs from a facility known as Pine Bluff Kennels.

Tech program targets minority students at South Plains College

The Texas Tech Institute of Environmental and Human Health was awarded $1.08 million by the National Institutes of Health to encourage minority students at South Plains College to pursue a degree in science at Tech.

This initiative, which is called the Plains Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program, is meant to assist minority students who are pursuing degrees in science at SPC, said Jaclyn Canas, the program's director.
