Tavis Smiley is all wound up. His voice is rough from too much vocalizing, but the host of public television's "Tavis Smiley" talk show and public radio's "The Tavis Smiley Show" is on an oratorical roll about race, politics and his fellow African-American, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

My dad was Batman. When I was 3, I got "Batman," the 1989 Tim Burton film, for Christmas. Before the movie started, Batman had a message for me saying that I needed to be a "good boy" for my parents and that the tape was for me, and me alone. I later (like 10 years later) realized that underneath the cape and cowl was my dad.

Howling to rival Hill Country coyotes resonated from Barton Springs as hundreds of locals gathered Friday night in observance of the full moon. A perfect example of Austin and the people who live here, the full moon gathering is a homegrown celebration in one of the city's most beautiful and natural landmarks.
