Allow me to take a card from President Barack Obama’s playbook and recant a former message. No, not that former President George W. Bush is the source of all things going wrong, including the Chicago Bears and Cubs being awful sports teams, European antagonism and the swine flu. The message I wish to repeat is Obama’s presidency so far has been a failed one.

First let us consider that apparently this H1N1 situation is a national emergency. Yet the administration has failed to present any evidence to back this announcement. Their buddies in the media can do nothing but repeat the mantra of terror being spread through the swine flu, but where is the information that gives such statements credibility?

The numbers actually state many more people die from the seasonal flu each year than have the swine flu this year, as reported by many news outlets including CNN. And we’re in a supposed state of emergency? The only thing emerging is our president’s irresponsibility and irrationality.

Speaking of which, when will our dear president make a decision about troops in Afghanistan? A host of voices, including Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Four-star General Stanley McChrystal agree the president should decide soon. McChrystal, the commander of the troops in Afghanistan — the supposed arena in which Obama wishes to attain victory the most — insists 40,000 more soldiers be added to the fight for that victory to be possible.

Yet while stating he wishes not to waffle and waste time, Obama is postponing this decision and waffling and wasting time while American soldiers needed for the fight are withheld and those in it are experiencing a decline in morale.

Meanwhile, what is holding our Washington leader’s attention? It’s not global warming because he has denied going to a summit on that issue in order to push two things: public-option health care and his irresponsible war with Fox News.

To cut a foolish argument short, this public-option health care business is simply illogical. What are the biggest two proponents for it? To create competition and counter those evil insurance companies and to provide for the portion of society that cannot provide for itself.

To answer the first, there are about 1,600 private insurance companies that allow for competition in the free market in this nation. It is ironic the same numerically challenged, IRS-evading group that pushed foolishly for the stimulus package is denying 1,600 separate companies is enough for one country.

To the idea these companies are comprised of evil, capitalizing elitists my response is, in a sense, “Yes.” Their main goal is to make money, but I think responsible citizens will find it far less likely to feel antipathy to them.

And as to this war he has enacted against Fox that has manifested itself with the pseudo-intellect of Robert Gibbs calling them out, how foolish can he be? Is this the hope and change you voted for the United States? Is this the post-modern, post-racial, post-partisan president the majority voted for? Or is this the far left, divisive and antagonistic president many on Fox actually called him out to be.

More it seems would agree with the latter as his popularity has taken as sharp a drop as a president’s ever has, going from 79 percent in January to 52 percent currently according to the Gallup poll.

Ten months into this administration, what are we left with if not increased political, social and economic tensions? I beg anyone to answer how these things fulfill the promises of hope, change and utopia that seemed certain only one year ago. If the futility is so absolute and definite so soon, will anything change for the better? Or is this how we can expect the proceeding years to happen?
I would assert there will be no improvement and we must ride out this unfortunate storm. Hopefully without too much digression.

Lubbock County is the MOST Conservative Republican County in the USA. Unlike the Progressive counties in Southern California, where each dog walker is required by law to pick up and properly dispose of the dog's Poop - the dog doesn't have that option - The Conservative Republicans in Lubbock LEAVE their Dog Poop on the ground instead of picking it up and properly disposing of it. I can attest to this First Hand!!!

The other pedestrians and children playing in the park are now free to step into the droppings and "enjoy" this wonderful aroma that compliments that Wonderful Feedlot Aroma that is ALSO the result of Conservative Republican "concern and responsibility" for our environment and his fellow man.

Yes, you have to hand it to Conservative Republicans; they are experts at creating a MESS and then expecting some else to clean it up........while blaming the OTHER for the problem in the first place.

Why should they care? All they care about is ME, My, Mine......especially MY MONEY.....the Quality of Life be DAMNED!

Lubbock - the Giant BACKSIDE of Texas..........and it certainly SMELLS that way too!!!

I believe the free handouts you are referring to are also all the profits/tax breaks the Republicans enjoyed during Bush's tenure, which also happened to be the time the economy collapsed. We have a system aimed at selfishness and that has reflected in our current society. The joke is that people tend to see things in either black or white and perhaps you should see the other side of the coin as there will always be some free "handout" no matter what side you're on. Democrats at least try to have a heart and understand that they have problems to fix, unfortunately ignorance runs rampantly in our country.
Patience is a virtue that most Republicans don't seem to have.

Joker-Dont know who that was aimed to exactly, but seems to me the girl has her head in the right spot. Why should the guy sitting at the grocery store be handed $5 when he can do something useful to earn that $5 instead? I dont claim to be a democrat or a republican, but this is one part of the democrat's system that I simply do not understand. Why is anyone worthy of free handouts?

Wallace-How can you say that the economy has turned around when the unemployment rate has steadily risen? We are above 10% unemployment for the first time in 26 years. The numbers as of right now are better yes, but wait till the next quarter's results come out and we see that the auto industry sank lower than before after the cash for clunkers program. All of Obama's "fixes" seem to be looked at only in the short term. Many of these look to have negative future impacts.

"Jonathan (Tech Student) Mon Nov 2 2009 01:07 Obama is a wuss."

Jonathon, I wish you wouldn't embarrass those of us who actually graduated from Tech and went on to responsible positions in Corporate America. You sound like a Junior High Student who never passed History.

How did you get into Tech? Were you part of Kent Hance's "Affirmative Action Program to get 40,000 Zombies enrolled in Tech?"

Promises unfulfilled? Maybe.

Now, a "promise is a verbal contract to perform a deed by a certain date." A contract is not a contract unless it has a beginning and an ending date.

Ok. What were the closing dates of each of the supposed unfulfilled promises made by President Obama?

PS. And we have 1,600 private insurance companies that allow for plenty of competition? Then why are there so many states where ONE (1) private insurance company has over 90% of the business? That is called a MONOPOLY. There are three (3) private insurance companies in the US that control the bulk of the business!

But that is NOT the REAL problem with private insurance companies. The things that make them so undesirable include 1) denial of coverage because of pre-existing conditions (the people who NEED the coverage, 2) dropping those that are ill (the people who NEED the coverage the MOST, 3) withholding part of the approved coverage AFTER the treatment (main cause of bankruptcy in the US because someone needed the treatment, 4) delaying approval of a treatment's coverage until the person dies (legal murder?) 5) canceling coverage if there is an indication it may be required (after having collected thousands of dollars in premiums.

The best private medical insurance is NO private medical insurance, because IT IS A CONFLICT OF INTERESTS....the private insurance does not exist to help the ones who NEED it most, but to DENY it to them and make the highest profit possible.......by taking in the MOST and paying out the LEAST!!!!!

Let the Private Insurance Companies make all the profit the Market Will Bear from Auto, Home, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Natural Disaster and a myriad of other creative coverages.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), facing a tough primary challenge from Sen. Kay Baily Hutchison (R), left many puzzled when he declared his state was recession proof.

Said Perry: "As a matter of fact ... someone had put a report out that the first state that's coming out of the recession is going to be the state of Texas ... I said, 'We're in one?'"

you mr. jonathan must do at least a little research before making a statement. Texas, like most of the other states is feeling the recession despite what their great "governor" says. This recession has affected not only the American economy, but the global economy as well. Texas’ economic losses are moderate compared to other states in the U.S. but it has been affected nonetheless and most major metropolitan areas in Texas will most likely experience/have already experienced a recession. As for your situation in Maryland, I only have two words for you GET OUT. Maryland - "If you can dream it, we can tax it!" As for Obama being scared in office to do anything...? I don't know what "scary" things Obama has done because Bush and all his other cronies did even "scarier" things if by "scary" you mean "nothing at all". Just a little something to think about. If Texas is such a great state for you and your situation in Maryland is so bad, then perhaps you should have stayed in Texas. This is possibly more an indication of your bad decision making than blaming it on Obama. Your last sentence is very typical random statement...9/11 never forget? While I do agree with you that we must never forget that date and the lives lost, I just don't see how that has anything to do with the other ignorant comments you made. It's just another typical statement with no point. It's no wonder we are in a recession in the first place with people who just want someone to blame like Mr. Jonathan.

Obama is a wuss. He is to scared to do anything in office. I agree with your article Mr. Coulson. and Mr. Robbins, how has he turned around the economy? our unemployment are approaching record highs. More and more people are losing their jobs everyday.

I am from Maryland, and I understand that Texans aren't feeling the bad economy- thanks to a great governor (Perry). but it is really bad in Maryland. My sister lost her job, and her husband is working a near minimum wage job with a college degree. Which I give all thanks to Obama for. Thank you Obama for not only destroying our nation, but attempting to socialize it.

9/11 never forget (although most people on this already have)

considering what Obama inherited, i think you're holding him to an impossible standard.

"W" had eight years (2,922 days) during which he demonstrated his gross ineptitude. Obama has been in office less than a year. He has turned the economy around and stopped the torture of prisoners. Even rightwingnut Republicans must look at their stock portfolios and smile!

No one can fail quite like Dubya!

Here's a little joke for you
Catherine - a little girl in our neighborhood
told me that she wanted to be President one day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there with us - and I asked Catherine - "If you were President, what would be the first thing you would do?"
Catherine replied - "I would give houses to all the homeless people."

"Wow, what a worthy goal you have there Catherine." I told her (while both
parents beamed), "but, you don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in the back yard and I will pay you $5 dollars. Then we can go
over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you
can give him the $5 dollars to use for a new house."
Catherine (who was about 4) thought that over for a second, and then replied,
"Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and clean up the dog poop himself, and you can pay him the $5 dollars."

"Catherine my dear, welcome to the republican party!"

I think the real story should be about how our entire government has failed us. Under both Bush and Obama our government has spent out of control and grown leaps and bounds. We had 8 years of a bad administration followed by what will be atleast 4 years of power hungry control freaks. People will be taking to the streets if government does not back out of our lives.

He is too busy doing more important things than wade in on the Afghan situation. Why he has already played more rounds of golf in 9 months than Bush did in 8 years, he has done 4 times as many political fund raisers as Bush had in this point of their presidencies, not to mention spending time to secure the Olympics for Chicago, and holding the highly intricate "Beer Summit". We have to thank him for promising that if he spent all of your money, you could be assured that unemployment would not rise above 8% and for not allowing that nasty "Prayer Day" distraction to enter the sanctity of the White House. Gosh where would he find time to trifle with piddly agenda items such as Soldiers' lives?

After 8 years of being governed by Bozo the clown who does not have an honest bone in his body as is shown by his former attorney general Alberto "Liar" Gonzales (I can't remember, I don't reember, I can't remember) who tried to trash the constitution, it is hard to undo all of the wrongs in the first 10 months of an administration. At least Obama is trying to straighten out this country in spite of the Becks and the Limbaughs of the religious conservative right dividing the country and spreading lies. Limbaugh got caught with his foot in his mouth last week with the phony thesis.

Give Obama a chance.

Obama the Joker.

29% strongly approve and 40% strong disaprove. Overall he is at 47% according to Ramussen. To answer your question its only going to get worse. Obama a prop up caricature of the MSM is a complete failure.
