JoJo Robertson already has begun to put her stamp on Texas Tech women’s golf.

Robertson, in her first year as head coach at Tech, and the Lady Raiders concluded their fall season with an eighth-place finish at the 2009 Challenge at Onion Creek on Monday and Tuesday in Austin and have a little time off before the spring season starts.

This fall season brought a few accomplishments on which the Lady Raiders can build.

“We’ve certainly had some bright spots and the girls have had great rounds this fall,” said Robertson, who spent five years at Purdue before joining Tech during the summer. “We had an individual winner in this last tournament and one of our freshman broke a record for a school round.”

The Tech women indeed have had some bright spots this fall, showing progress with Robertson at the helm. The Lady Raiders shot their lowest round as a team ever in school history with a 1-over-par 281 in the Challenge at Onion Creek.

The freshman who set the school record was Kimberly Kaufman, whose final round of 5-under 65 at the Challenge at Onion Creek is the lowest ever shot in school history.
Winning her first tournament at Tech —  her first finish in the top five — was junior Alex Gibson, who claimed the individual title in the Heather Farr Memorial Golf Tournament in Erie, Colo., Oct. 6. The Lady Raiders also won that tournament — the program’s first win in any tournament since 2007.

That performance made the Big 12 Conference take notice Wednesday — Gibson was name Big 12 Golfer of the Month for shooting 5-under 213 in that same tournament.

On top of all that, the Lady Raiders have risen a No. 43 in the nation with Robertson at the helm.

Robertson said one area the Lady Raiders could improve on before the spring season begins is getting off to a better start rather than having to work so hard to come from behind.

In each tournament Tech has played this fall, the Lady Raiders have moved up in the standings from the first round of the tournament to the last.

“It seemed like we for whatever reason didn’t get our first round the way we wanted to, and so we were fighting so hard just to finish somewhere in the middle,” Robertson said.

Robertson and the Lady Raiders have the rest of the fall to prepare for the spring season that begins with the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Feb. 7 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They’ll feature a particularly young squad when that time comes — Rosalyn Kim is the lone senior on the team.
